Your attic insulation is one of the most important energy savings items to consider. In the Utah winter, the heat that you are paying for to keep your home comfortable rises up to the attic. If you don’t have enough attic insulation, much of your heat will escape from your house. During the summer season, heat is beating down on the roof of your home. If you don’t have enough attic insulation, this heat will infiltrate into the rest of your cool home, making the cool air much less effective in cooling down your house. If you own an older Utah home, your attic likely has sheets or bags of fiberglass insulation batts or blown-in insulation. Regardless, you need more insulation to keep your home more comfortable and reduce your utility bills. You can use blown-in insulation or foam boards to accomplish this. Both are effective and efficient ways to make your home more energy efficient. Though these two methods are different, neither of them has a greater R-value than the other. They do have their different advantages in your home, however. If you elect for blown-in attic insulation, this can be done effectively and quickly, limiting the amount of disruption and traffic through your home. Mounting foam boards in your attic does take some more time, but they can be installed directly onto the roof instead of sprayed on the attic floor. This allows for attic space to be used as more than just an insulation barrier. Before you put insulation in your attic, there are some preparatory steps that have to be made. If insulation is put in without these necessary steps it could prevent you from getting into your attic or could block vents, preventing air circulation. Barriers or baffles will help keep the insulation in place. Baffles are often installed between rafters, which allows the airflow to be maintained. Barriers can also keep insulation in place so that you can get into your attic without having insulation escape into the rest of your living space. If you have an air leak in your attic, insulation will not fix this. Insulation is a type of air filter, not an air barrier. In order to fix the leak, our contractors will have to clear the area of any current insulation (so it’s better to have this repaired before you re-insulate your attic) in order to see the structure around the leak. After the area is cleared, they are able to seal all of the points where air is escaping. Then insulation can be installed in an effective manner.Attic Insulation Utah Options
